on this day

on this day
on this day
we would be drinking
of course
her cocktails
my cheap beer
maybe even pub crawl
throw some darts
bath in bright sexy neon
sing the birthday song again
and later
grab a burger
at MacDonald's
light our cigarettes
blowing smoke rings
into the frosty night
then to a 7-11
for more beer
my hands on her
slim waist
whispering into her ears
and she would giggle
her girlish giggle
the street lights
shine a little brighter
and we would wish
the night would not end.
but city tales
have a way
of turning nasty
and so
her birthdays ended
too soon.

Rosemary at Poets & Storytellers United would like us to write about "darkness and light". Perhaps this piece can qualify?

Sweet and sad! I very much relate.
Thank you, Rosemary! 😀
I experienced chills from line one thru the end. What a beautifully composed happy/sad poem.
And the memories of such nights, such birthdays stay on...
Helen,
Thank you! :)
Rajani,
Thank you!
Yes, they stay on...
Yeah after darkness comes light wishing more happy birthdays. Nice one
Thank you, Jossina! :)
Sad and sweet. Beautifully written.
Thank you, Sara! :)
You set it up beautifully, all the joys of a live well lived together. I knew there would be a crash at the end, but the beginning was no less beautiful even knowing that.
Thank you, Rommy!
I couldn't have said it better, "a crash at the end". :)
