today

Has it been that long already?

today

I am sure my mind
is going like a fog
but there are things
that i will not forget

      like your wry smile
      persimmons, fat and red
      noodles on birthdays
      and the night you left

and if i should meet you
i may not know what to say
for it has been so many years
you may find me a stranger today.

A relatable sentiment. I love the mix of memories in the third stanza.

Wistful! And adept as always – your deceptively simple, beautifully crafted verse.

The memories are so strong and vivid, and so so good to have if even considered a stranger years later.

Right! How funny a meeting with an old love can turn out to be something entirely different emotionally from where we left off! I find most of these encounters to go well - tells one, I suppose, the right decision was made! Well penned.

That's the way things go. At our granddaughter's wedding I sat next to my ex on the grandparent row. I didn't recognize her at first, she was a big woman. Bigger than I had memories of. Mrs. Jim had to tell me who she was.

Our lives pass on from door to door...I've met so many people I was getting to know, and liked, and then didn't see for a while. I remember them as friends but if I see them today I probably wouldn't recognize them. Sometimes I've thought I saw an old friend and it's been a member of the younger generation of the family.

Not all memories that wander are lost.

It's strange, isn't it? How we can forget things we thought meant everything, and always remember the seemingly unimportant ones. Time is a strange mirror...

Priscilla,

Thank you!
I like what you said about "our lives pass on from door to door. This is so true in many ways. We are occupied with the little details of our lives, our work. We lost our way from personal tragedies. And we are growing older every day.

Magaly,

Thank you!
Indeed, time can be a strange mirror. We thought we could carry all these memories to our graves, but in the end i wonder how much we can keep. :(

I do not know how your comment ended up in my spam folder (happens to others too), but i retrieved it and thank you for it.

I like to see how my readers interpret a poem. :)

When you've remembered the way someone was for so long that you've lost track of the way person is...

Not altogether unlike the feeling of having left a tab open for two months and not made the time to read the post. :-)

Thank you, Priscilla!
