how deep is
how deep is
your love?
down in the
subway tunnels
on late nights
some nights
aimless rides
the tunnel walls
just inches
from my face
flashing by
our lives
on a reel
of memory
sliding by
till it all ends
on a bleak night
and here i am
all alone
in the
rumbling wombs
of the trains
that song
playing again
on the tracks
how deep is
your love?
till i resurface
to the neon
drenched streets
to the city lights
starlight

The subway IS deep and a great setting for a poem like this. So many sensory cues and clues.
Oh, I love it all! The rhythm, the atmosphere created, those snatches of song ... (a song I'm unfamiliar with but now want to know).
Generally how deep is your love means large, long. But here, the writer's sweetie' love must be deep, deep to reach your poet. I liked it, I kept looking for the merger, it didn't happen.
..
The darkness of the subway ride reminds me that sometimes we can find wisdom in dark places. If we're lucky, that wisdom might bring us some peace. But even if it doesn't, at least we come out with something to show for our time spent there.
I found it fascinating to people watch on the subways at night... You reminded me of that here with this poem...
I like the image of aimless subway rides...with a special friend, or with the thought of one.
Colleen,
Thank you!
yes, I think subways are a great setting for poems, especially if they are angsty, angry and dark :)
Rosemary,
Thank you!
I think by writing in short lines, the atmosphere would be much terse and tense and uncomfortable.
The song this poem is based on is "How Deep Is Your Love" by The Bee Gees. You have probably heard of them. :D
Jim,
Thank you!
The subway tunnels here are pretty deep. Some run under rivers and skyscrapers.
The writer is thinking of the times he's riding the trains with his sweetie, and now he's riding it alone.
Rommy,
Thank you!
It does. Even though we hear of awful things in some subways.
Margaret,
Thank you!
It can be fascinating to watch people on subways at night. One will never know what interesting people they may encounter.
Priscilla,
Thank you!
In this case with the thought of one.
Your poem is simply gorgeous!!!! I love riding subways above and below ground ... regular trains as well, incredibly romantic.
Than you, Helen!
We simply have to rely on public transport. Cars are terribly expensive. :)
Love the imagery, the tone, the movement, the structure (how it nudged me to almost sing the poem). I also enjoyed the memories it brought to mind. In New York City, so many moments are lived deep, deep, deep in trains...
Thank you, Magaly!
The subway is a world of itself. I haven't been to New York, but I am amazed by those in Tokyo. I think our subways here are pretty amazing too. :)
