or else

or else
mother used to say
be good, don't tell lies
else the Thunder God
will strike you with his hammer
and lightning rods.
& we cower under sheets
when a thunderstorm arrives.
also, do not talk to strangers
they will abduct you
cut off your heads
and use it to support bridges.
& we would view strangers
with a suspicious eye.
remember, do not do evil
else you will be banished
to the 18th Hell
where you suffer forever.
& we try to be good boys
finish off every grain of rice.
then in time we learned
lightning is electricity
Jap occupiers hang heads on bridges
and as for Hell
we have been through many.
& how can we laugh at her ignorance?
for what she give us was love?
so the next time we see lightning
arcing across the sky
it is not the Thunder God's anger
it is mother's beautiful smile.

Oh how I love this! "What she gave us was love". And it turned a thunder god into your mother's smile. So very moving, Lee San. Your mother lives, in this poem. I can see her.
a unique and delightful way to look at a mothers love..and her care of you...bkm
The care a mother show should always be remembered (even her white little lies)
Sherry,
Thank you!
This is an old poem i recently found in a typed page in a folder. and i thought it would be just right for mother's day. :)
signed...bkm,
Thank you! :)
yes even her "white little lies". anything to keep her kids in line. :)
Thank you, Bjorn.
This is a wonderful, wonderful poem! And a perfect day to share it. Most of mother's advice was pretty good. We sure miss their wisdom after they are gone, don't we??
I will never look at lightning the same way again. My grandma used to say that lightning flashes were signs of a bored god taking pictures. I prefer to think it's her, grinning at me (as we both remember those love-coated little lies).
I guess they do it for our own good .. knowing we can be reckless when we are young.
This is tender and beautiful - a wonderful write! :-)
I'm Familiar With The Matriarch "Warden" : )
What we say to raise our children well. I was glad to see the change in the lightning from beginning to end.
Mary,
we sure miss their wisdom, we do.
Magaly,
haha, "love-coated little lies"!
at that young age, we sure believe anything they say. :)
Sanaa,
oh yes, they do it for our own good.
Rob,
thank you! :)
ZQ,
glad to see you.
The Matriarch "Warden"?
Mr. Walker,
yes, in whatever way to raise them well. or what we thought. :)
thanks for the visit!
Oh, this is just so beautiful! :-) Thanks.
