echoes in the night

I wrote this for NaPoWriMo 2014. Urggh! Not many eyeballs there, so a re-post. The piece was inspired by a scary urban legend. Thought of reworking it. Decided not.

echoes in the night

the distant thud of thunder
that might have been
the last beat of your heart

in the blackness of the room

only the ticking of the clock
the slow twitch of its luminous hands
grasping the hour of the night

a shade of ghastly green

and then quite clearly from the ceiling
tock//tock//tock
the sound of marbles dropping

but above that is only the rooftop...

This is why I sometimes prefer to sleep... the terror of sound.

Oh, that is quite spooky. The setting is quite exciting and for someone who loves scary stuff, I enjoyed the progression. The luminous hands of the clock and that shade of ghastly green provide such interesting vivid details.

I'm happy you didn't tinker with perfection. Powerful, haunting.

Oh, that is eerie, the sound from the ceiling.........I can hear the deep silence in the room, and the ticking of the clock. It reminds me of Grandma's house when I was a kid, so peaceful you could be in any of its four rooms and hear the metal clock on the kitchen windowsill.

Wow! What a scene you have painted here - imbuing it with a depth of reflection that put me in it. Fantastic writing, here!

Sherry,

the sounds from the ceiling, it is still happening. i am told there are scientific explanations for those, like bars in the concrete contracting at night, or bubbles in water pipes.
but i can tell them it really sounds like marbles.

Chrissa,

:D
i hope it's still sunny outside.

Wendy,

thank you! :)
