dragon

Imagine one dark night in a medieval English village, a strange, unidentified object hovers in the sky...

dragon

                   We draw our longbows waiting
for the beast to come. But the
dragon just hangs there in the
             air, above the poplars, exhaling
fire. Its scales of metal glisten in the last of
dusk's light, its two fiery eyes
glowing red with anger and alarm.
     Our horses are nervous, stamping
   their hoofs, the village hounds
   run around in circles, barking.
The braver of the villagers stand
watching the rings of smoke and dust
through the trees, some with swords
and staffs. The beast seems to be wounded, swaying
in the air, but soon it steadies
itself, flies around the village in
a wide circle, and climbs back into
the clouds. Fear grip our hearts.

We could have caught a dragon today.

This is so well imagined, and so well told. I could see them all, the beast, the villagers, the dogs.

Oh this is so entrancing! I could picture the "dusk's light, its two fiery eyes glowing red with anger and alarm" and read on with bated breath as the villagers braced themselves at the end.

You made me see the scene so clearly, the red eyes, the nervous horses, the dragon circling, then flying off.........

That was an interesting piece to read. I wonder what the ancestors would have thought of alien ships. We know they saw things in their time as they left pictures stories for future generations to read. Interesting form as well, it looks like a bow to me.

I love dragons – and also incline to the view that we have been visited (or briefly observed anyway) for millennia – so naturally I very much enjoyed this poem.

I'm afraid my eyesight isn't wonderful and I had to copy and paste your poem in order to read it as the font is so small - but it was worth it! I enjoyed your imaginative tale and still have the scene in my head. :)

Truedessa,

thank you!
yes, it seems the ancestors left clues of alien ships, but perhaps humankind would like to think that we are the only intelligent species.

originally, i worked the shape around a cigar-shaped thing, but it looks more like a sphere (or Saturn), so i changed it to a silhouette of a stealth bomber, which does look cigar-shaped at times. :)

Chrissa,

:)

what if somehow, the craft came down, and they discovered it was a machine, which they would never comprehend. assisted flight in a heavier than air monstrosity?

Wendy,

thank you! :)

Rosemary,

thank you! there are clues that we have been 'visited' for millennia. :)

Kim,

i am sorry about the small font, but i have to size it smaller to keep the integrity of the shape. :)

So wonderfully clever - in both shapes and words. I wouldn't doubt that there are beasts right above the clouds. Smiles.
