walking away

walking away
leaves
leaves all behind
no one looks up
not even a goodbye
what is there to remember?
a song's notes
that fade off in half flight
a wind in November
a walk to the gate
a wave to the guards
to the chainlink fence
and the air seems so cold
even though
the rain trees
swelter in the noon heat
their leaves
leaves
falling
falling
as the wind whispers
it is a good day.

It is a strange feeling, walking out on my last day of work, out of a place that is almost like a second home. I feel neither sad nor happy, just looking forward to my birthday a day later. 🙂

You capture very well that indeterminate feeling. I wish you a richly enjoyable retirement!
I enjoyed reading the poem. Could relate to the feeling.
Well, that is very unthinking of your workmates, to not acknowledge your years of dedicated service. Happy Birthday, Lee San - and enjoy what comes next. If you have retired, be prepared to begin enjoying having the whole long day to do whatever you feel like doing. If you are going to another job, may the people there appreciate you. I most love the song that fades off in half flight, and the wind in November.
Unless it's with relief, leaving a job is realizing it was a job rather than the stable home it pretended to. I think that sense of uneasiness is catching and you capture it well.
Your poem gives me a very peaceful feeling. Yes, it is a good day!
Happy Retirement Lee San! Been to this space. And Happy Birthday! Enjoy every moment in your own way.
Rosemary,
yes, i am enjoying the retirement, doing things i wanted to do. :)
Purba,
thank you! :)
Sherry,
thank you.
i don't blame the co-workers. i think it is the system, of hectic hours and uncompromising deadlines and downsizing. i am glad i am out of it.
hehe, my birthday is on the coming November, but i thank you for the wishes. i wrote this poem more than half a year after i left the job. you know my muse can be cranky. :)
Ah, this feeling is so tender and comforting. The mixed emotions of having left something one is habitual to (like a "second home") is so well expressed.

How can someone not give a farewell party or acknowledge a person's years of work and dedication? Sigh.. I hope you're enjoying the retirement 💜💜
Chrissa,
thank you. sometimes i do forget that a job is just a job. :(
Mary,
thanks! retirement may be a good thing. :)
Sumana,
thank you! i am trying to enjoy every moment now. :)
Anmol,
thank you! :)
Sanaa,
i did have a farewell party a couple of weeks back, and i am thankful for that. It's just that on that last day, i think everyone's busy. anyway, i am enjoying the retirement. :)
This is brilliant poetry writing. Now you will have time to smell the roses, stare out of the window and dream. Hope you submit this one to a journal.
thank you so much, Cressida.
yeah, now that i have some free time, maybe i can think about submitting to those journals again. :)
