heavy metal

"even as the magpies
flapped in
from the storm"

heavy metal

the sky was rocking
heavy metal,
clouds bruised
blue black,
as white light slashed
across its face
it growled
as in pain.

i leaned at the window
watched
as my cigarette smoke
curled outside
to die
in the rain.

This poem is a repost. It was published here in 2006. It was one of my favourite poems then, and still is.

Power Play

One evening, on reaching my home after work, a tropical storm broke. The display of fury was awesome, and it prompted me to write this. I was keeping this poem, trying to edit it, but this week was rather busy with work, so i will just drag it out and post it.

You folks must be tired of me writing about storms. :)

power play, 7.05 p.m.

the sky was having
an argument of sorts
the sun was not backing off

night made it known
that it was its turn
and announced it

the stratosphere flickered
like fluorescence gone awry
the sky blinked, then

an electric pitchfork
arced like a parabola
of a slashing katana

the white hot streak
cracking the porcelain skin
of the retreating sky

the troubled air
hissing with the urgency
of an incoming shell

as the rain clouds rolled in
like a cavalry charge
in demented flight

swollen with rain
tumbling over rooftops
TV antennas

sending blackbirds
screaming for shelter
then the sky

turned a darker shade
of rusty grey
with a mean streak

of crimson
slashed across
its face.

Heavy Metal

The muse is back. I was watching an awesome display of lightning during a thunderstorm when the words just sort of dropped in. She's still angry, yeah.
