if time could stand still

if time could stand still
if time could stand still
just for a while, for us
in a fine restaurant
sipping champagne
a name we could not
pronounce
and later
hand in hand
at the esplanade
the waves gently
slapping breakwaters
we are
looking for falling stars
hidden in the
warm glow of moonlight
but time
is a ruthless herder
it makes no compromises
heeds no pleas
and so
it is not to be.

I can feel the heartache in the last two lines, all built up from the sweetness of the images before. The "it is not to be" feels like a giant hand knocking over every sweet dream of a future.
Oh dang! It was such a nice fantasy there for a while.
Time doesn't play favorites and never admits its faults!
Rommy,
yes, the "it is not to be" ending happens.. :(
Beverly,
ah, the nice fantasy didn't last long.
Colleen,
right, time doesn't play favourites. Pauper or king, they are the same.
very well written, i especially like these lines"
"we are
looking for falling stars
hidden in the
warm glow of moonlight"
"but time
is a ruthless herder"
OMG!! Luv those lines
Happy Sunday

"... a ruthless herder" is such a wonderful way to describe time! It certainly directs us where it wants, and when it wants.
Yes, that ending comes down heavy and final, after the delightful picture you paint earlier. What a great keynote: 'Time is a ruthless herder', and I love the Steinbeck quote in this context too.
As I read your poem, my sighs began, increasing in volume, thru the end. Lovely writing.
I read this as a long ago memory that you wish you could still experience but time moves on ans we are left with bittersweet memories. It is a lovely poem.
Humans seem to be the only animals not to accept the problems of living long lives rather than the obvious rule that we are here to maintain our species number.
Phillip,
Thank you for visiting! :)
Gillena,
Thank you! :)
Lisa,
yes, i thought it would be pretty hard to go against it. well, impossible. :)
Rosemary,
Thank you!
All good things must come to an end?
i like that quote too.
Helen,
Thank you!
glad you like the poem. :)
Debi,
yes, you will find the 70's and 80's in the labels. that's when all these warm memories are.
Robin,
well, humans are the 'intelligent' species and would like to stamp their dominance. and then they would like to do that within nations and races, and therein lies the problem. :(
Beautiful writing.

Thank you! :)
