these are days

these are days
in the news feed today the coronavirus had taken
a couple more of thousand lives
other countries seem far away, their names distant
and hard to pronounce
a crow looks at you from the top of a lamp post
cawing with mad laughter
we walk into days like this, like a trap-door
sprung, soaking with sweat
a guy calls at you from across the street and says
hi but your name is not johnny
looks like the morning you are looking for has
gone to the Colosseum with the lions
a garbage truck thunders past its vile breath
dusting you at the bus stop
the stray cat on the floor opens one eye and looks
at you, and closes it again.

My favourite lines. Luv this mornibg contemplation, and those laughing crows, and that vile breath from the garbage thrucks. This one's a winner.
Happy you dropped by my blog today
Much💜love
It's THAT crazy. My favorite line is: looks like the morning you are looking for has
gone to the Colosseum with the lions
And such is life! 18 months or more of Covid and there are still countries with hundreds of cases.
I really like the vividness of each couplet. They feel like photographic flashes. And the image of the cat lingers...
Gillena,
Thank you! :)
Colleen,
yah, some days are. :)
Thank you!
Robin,
yes, such is life.
our neighbouring country's situation is getting worse. As for us, our cases are back to single digits, and the leaders are declaring that we must live with the virus. like that with the common flu.
Magaly,
Thank you!
i like that cat image too. :)
Oh, (as you might guess) I absolutely love this style of poetry – the tone, the throwaway lines, everything. Not to discount the seriousness of what you are saying; in fact the slightly surreal images seem to bring that home even more than a literal depiction might have done ... and certainly take us straight into the speaker's feelings, without ever mentioning them.
Thank you, Rosemary.
i am glad you are able to see the 'structure' of the poem, despite my being not too great a fan of structured poetry. this is also in a way a list poem, listing all the 'bad' things that had encountered before. not too positive a poem, but telling it like it is. :)
So much happening. Great observations.
Thank you, magiceye! :)
Yes you've captured the prevailing global mood....Surreal....Stay safe...find small things to bring a little smile like a lovely ripe mango...we have to wait until Christmas...)
So many fabulous images, the Colosseum, the crow and finally the cat... I find this form hard to do but you seem to have mastered it.
Rallentanda,
a lovely ripe mango is perfect for the day. sweet, and like the sun. :)
Debi,
Thank you!
Not really hard, just watch out for the length of the lines. :)
Day after day after day ... you tell it as it is. I enjoyed your poem!! Well done.
Thank you, Helen! :)
What a gorgeous poem. What I loved the most was the capacity to observe. Astounding.
Greetings from London.
Thank you, Mario!
ah yes. to see the smallest details, & write about them. :)
Mind blowing post
Thank you, Rajani! :)
