a scream in the night
a scream in the night
the cellphone is buzzing
and now lies on the bed
backlit face taunting
i jump at the ring
of phones, cell or otherwise
in the night
it is a habit
it is 2 a.m. it is the time
for ghosts
and howling dogs
it was a very drunk big-fingered
dork looking for
another night owl.
i should have unconditionally given
him some opinion
but i am glad
it wasn't a call to get back
to the office
to some dark street.

Good one. I fear the phone ring because of the past reports of death I have received on the other end.
Oh those late night calls....so frustrating when we think we must answer them for it could be an emergency and then it is just nothing waking us.
Yikes!! You describe the dark side of the night with such accuracy.. howling dogs and ghosts indeed!
Colleen,
thank you for visiting! :)
yes, i do fear this type of calls too.
Donna,
when i was on call standbys, i dislike all these late night calls to get back to work. sometimes it is a relief when it is a wrong number, but still the sleep is interrupted. :(
Ha.. that's the fear that keeps me setting my phone in flight-mode at night.
"...the time for ghosts and howling dogs"........and usually a phone call at that hour carries bad news. Glad it was just someone wanting to talk.
Ah, I can imagine, those standby calls at the middle of night...
Quite scary to receive a call in the night. I am glad it turned out to be nothing serious. I put my phone on 'do not disturb' so only a few chosen people can reach me in a nighttime emergency, if they need to.
You caught the mood and nuances of this late night scene, brilliantly here - and placed your reader there, picking up the phone!
Good one! Why are the worst calls ~come in the night?
ZQ
Thanking the blessing of what it is not. How true. When I think of all the things a call in the night could be. . . Why even have a phone? To get those emergency calls from family everywhere, especially those in their 90s. I jump at the ring every time.
Sanaa,
no, really, at one time the dogs in my neighbourhood like to bark and howl in the middle of the night, and you know what they said about howling dogs at the dead of night...
Bjorn,
wished i could too, but at that time i was on 24/7 standby.
Sherry,
yes, glad it was a wrong number. :)
Neeraj,
i think you know too, being a SAP professional. :)
Mary,
phone calls in the dead of night are never welcome. :)
Wendy,
i have to pick up that call. :)
ZQ,
it's called Murphy's Law. :)
Susan,
at that time, i really dread those late calls.
we can live without a phone and we can't live without one. :)
I know this.
Many moons ago - the mid-nineties - I was on call once a week for my place of work. In the two years I worked there, I was only called out once. Nevertheless, I wasted many hours sleep the other nights, just waiting for the call that never came.
Anna :o]
No one likes the ring of phones at that hour of the morning. Nice write Cheong Lee san.
Thanks for dropping in at my Sunday Standard this week
much love...
Anna,
yes, sometimes the waiting is the worst part, and if it is a very rainy night, you really hope that there will be no calls. :)
Gillena,
no one really.
thank you! :)
Nicely written! :-)
Greetings from London.
Thank you, Cuban! Nice of you to drop by. :)
