O

in a darkened room
look into a mirror
at midnight,
              be afraid
              what is inside
              the glass
in the
reflection
              there is
              besides..

and the scream,
which is
not your own...

Yup, I'm sure you have... All too scary for me and all too well realised here, as I'd expect from such an adept poet like yourself

Great minds think alike. I have a poem scheduled to drop at midnight tomorrow that was inspired by Carnival of Rust as well.
I love the tense atmosphere in this poem. Something is surely lurking in the shadows!

Cheong, I can't remember the last time I was scared, can you, in the real world? Next might be the COVID-19 of which I've been exposed (we have had our shots/jabs), I hope that isn't what's in your mirror.
The last time might have been from my own driving. :)

Naledi,

you too? i think those directors/producers are geniuses at making people frightened. 😁

Ashok,

😁
not scary enough?

Jim,

COVID-19 is scary but with the jabs should be okay.

In the real world, I can remember the one time I was scared out of my wits. That was the time I was serving in the army and my camp was at the end of a long, muddy road.

One weekend I was booking out late to go home. I missed the camp transport, and so I walked all the way out alone to the main road. It was already quite dark by then, and as I rounded a curve, I saw standing in the bushes and trees a figure in white. It had long hair and seemed like a lady. I had no desire to find out, I muttered all my prayers, fingered my amulet, and ran to the coffeeshop and bright lights just a short distance away.

I told the proprietress there that I may have encountered a ghost, but she said that it was human. you see, the figure I saw, there is a sad story. She was a young lady. Her man left her, she lost her baby, and she lost her mind. Most of the villagers living in the area knew about her. So, yes, humans can scare humans too. 😱

Nothing scarier than looking in a dark mirror, especially if you catch yourself unawares with hair askew and jaw slack. I love the two, succinct and biting. And thanks for visiting me!! I love comments from people far far away. Now you're sitting alongside, and the world is smaller.

Great story, the unknown involving another person. I too had a late night scare when in the Army. I fell into a hole during a night training exercise with no one around me. Hours later they came looking for me with Jeeps and search lights.

Yvonne,

Thank you, and Greetings from sunny Singapore! Glad to know you.
yes, the world got much smaller with the internet.
i like your comment of catching oneself unaware in a mirror. can be quite shocking. 😲

i have turned on comment moderation (too many spam messages) so your comment may not appear immediately. 😀

Jim,

It must have been a harrowing experience.

i have a near mishap with a deep hole in the army once, and i may be writing about it here. 😨
