Another from my NaPoWriMo posts...
Another weight off the heart...

bear

She dragged me into the departmental store, to the toys, and pointed to a teddy bear, an exquisite, plush cutie, her eyes glowing with excitement, and I said, "but you have already 25 others" and dragged her out of the mall.

But that evening, I was back there, with the milling crowd and Christmas carols, I thought, what's the problem with one more bear, and at the gift-wrap counter, I told the lady the bear was for a very special person, and she smiled.

ash

walking across an empty car park, my heart has taken on the darkness of this night. i am thinking about a lot of things, the twelve hour shift i have just clocked, the hunger in my belly, the way this country is going, this rain that is still falling. the two NYC cops. Christmas doesn't feel like Christmas anymore. you want to run tears like the cold rain that had fallen on your face.

i punch a coke
from the vending machine.
wish it was a beer.

micro-fiction - home

Trying out a little micro-fiction. This baby has been sitting in my computer for a couple of years. Time to dust it out. Doesn't look too micro, isn't it?

home

It was Christmas again, how he wished he was at home with his family, and his dog, by the fireplace. Just his luck, the ballot for the limited seats on the flight home was unkind. A video conference with his family later will do. Still, it was not so bad. His fellow miners had even managed to whip up a rare Christmas meal, with a roast turkey thrown in. He smiled and looked out of the dormitory window. It was dark outside, as usual. And hanging in the black sky, like a piece of cut blue jewel, his home. Earth.
