Dear 2021

It was the train pulling out of the station, and no one was waving...

Dear 2021

Dear 2021

I know, it is the beginning of the year, but you sure know how to grab our attention. The world, and especially America, looks on with disbelief, as its own people storms the Capitol, trying to overturn an election result.

Then, as another joke, a large container ship runs aground and obstructs the Suez canal, disrupting global trade. We can never forget the image of a little digger trying to free the behemoth from the banks.

The Summer Olympics finally gets going, one year later, and as a cyclist, I watch all the cycling events and was touched by the enthusiastic Japanese people along the route cheering the competitors on. Also, American gymnast Simone Biles taught us it's alright if we don't feel right.

The USA exits Afghanistan after 20 years of war, and people are pointing the fingers to the memory of Vietnam. For a kid who lost a dad early in the war, the kid is probably all grown up now, and wondering if the servicemen, and the trillions of dollars, can be put to better use.

You let billionaires go to space for joyrides and and turn a blind eye to disinformation, as it continues to fool people on social media, where governments are also waging a relentless propaganda war.

It seems like nothing happened, COVID-19 continues to hog the news, and yet we continue to be touched, angered, perplexed and entertained by the year's events.

You will not walk out with a hobble. You will walk, maybe hunched, but walk. And let us all hold our hands, forget our differences of opinions, and wish for a normal return to life from the pandemic. And a true yearning for a return to peace.

Sincerely

Lee San

Magaly at Friday Writings told us to write a β€œDear 2021” open letter, in verse or in prose. So this is it. It is a very hurried write. Wish I have some time to polish it. :)

What a great letter! Beautifully written – and you've noted some major events I had even forgotten in the focus on the pandemic. Yes indeed, to your closing remarks. May it be so!

So much crazy happened all at once and it all feels like a blur at the same time. I could do with a little less intensity in the year to come.

Colleen,

Thank you!
I feel that all is not lost yet. All can come together to tackle climate change, disinformation, arms race and more. It is tough, it doesn't look good, but mankind often has a way of sorting out its problems.

Goodness, reading all together is rather startling. So much in a year... so much horror and loss and disease and people acting stupid. I wonder what your 2022 letter will look like.

A very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and your family. πŸŽ…

Magaly,

Yes, so much has happened in a year, and it left us horrified, saddened, incredulous, entertained and even inspired.

I must perhaps go back and rephrase that line. The kid I was referring to is just any general person. I lost no relatives in the Afghan war. :)

I am so glad knowing you, inspired by your writings and your brave fight against sickness. Stay healthy and safe and let's hope 2022 will be a good year.

A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and your family. πŸŽ…

i'll drink to that lee. awesome letter. yes things are kind of scary here in americana, i was talking to my grandfather who fought in WW2, a life long republican, now watches in disbelief as his republican party, for over 70 years, turns into a domestic terrorist group. it hurts me to see that look on his face. everything he fought for, his buddies died for, quickly going up in smoke... be well my friend.

Hi Phillip,

Thank you for the comment.
I salute every serviceman who fought for his country, for freedom. It must have broken your grandfather's heart to see America going inwards.
Things are not looking good for America at the moment, but she always have a way of righting herself.

Stay safe, stay healthy, buddy. And let's hope the New Year will be a much better year.
Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year.
