Another beer

Another beer
the table top was a map
of battle sites or
was it the rings
of an old tree?
anyway
the empty bottles
were lined up
like stacks of
brown chimneys.
my friend stubbed
out his cigarette
on the said formica top
chain smoked another
and
tried to jab a slice
of century egg into
his mouth
all at the same time
and i was thinking i
had had enough
of this shit.
i was leaning back
on the chair
trying very hard
not to fall
when the beer girl
with the tight t-shirt
came over trying to
convince us
to buy another beer.

For the blue-collar slobs like us at that time, the poison of choice was beer. There's nothing like a few friends emptying beer bottles rapidly at a table. :)
“You can't be a real country unless you have a beer and an airline - it helps if you have some kind of football team, or some nuclear weapons, but in the very least you need a beer.”

This really fizzes :-)
and burps. :)
I can see it. I especially like the ambidextrous, multitasking friend, lol.
A scene recreated in a thousand neighborhood pubs on any given Friday night (frequently with wife and children at home waiting dinner)!
this gave me a smile and a few memories from days passed :)
I really like your poetry because it is vivid and the stuff of real life. You set the scene, carry out the execution with all the details so well. Sounds like the 'beer girl' knew her job!
I actually felt this was great as it certainly described the realism of life....
That's an incredible quote and an even better poem!!!💜
Luv when your shift takes us to the "beer girl"
Nice!!!
Good Sunday, Cheong Lee san
much love...
I can see the scene. Made think of my husband's beer nights - every Wednesday like religion. But he and the "boys" (a cute description since they're all over 70) drink no more than two. They prefer to get drunk on their chatter.
I enjoyed the poem even if it didn't win an award.
This is great! You've sketched the scene brilliantly, so that your reader is carried along from start to close.
Yup! For us it was a shot and and a beer. Isn't America great?
Hopefully not to be like that, great again. I'm not optimistic : (
Always enjoy my visit with you.

thank you! :)
Mary,
better than most. :)
Donna,
thank you! :)
Sanaa,
glad you liked the quote. :)
Gillena,
thank you! :)
Myrna,
a religion!
we too do not drink like that anymore as we grew older. just an occassional bottle.
Wendy,
thank you! :)
ZQ,
have some hope, America will be great again.
for that, have a shot and a beer again! :)
Well it impresses me. And you know, I love the insight into maleness, which no amount of feminism (and I hasten to add I am a feminist) will ever let us experience for ourselves.
Glad to know, via Frank Zappa, that when it comes right down to it, Australia is a real country.
it is a way us males let off some steam, else we will be wasting our money on other things.
well, according to Frank Zappa, we have a real country too. we have a pretty well-known brand of beer. :)
