7th month
She's staying in because this is the Chinese 7th Month. The 7th Month is also known as the Ghost Month in the Chinese calendar, which the traditional Chinese believe the ghosts and spirits are released from the lower world and allowed to roam this mortal world. Activities during the month would include ritually offering food, and burning of hell money to appease these spirits.
So you can see why the muse is staying put.

7th month
i.
are there ghosts
that scramble
for paper gold
eat their fill
of fruits & meat
that line the
pathways the drains
the aprons of concrete?
ii.
it is not so much
we feared them
iii.
do we not share the
same corridors
the roads,
the playgrounds?
it is that we pray
please do no harm to us.
iv.
and so take
the gold and money
and fruits and meat
v.
and gather round
smouldering joss sticks
the fires of wax candles
and burning offerings
the flames flickering
on bare ground
in cauldrons
vi.
as
the night wind stirs
the fluttering ashes
that are your regrets &
unfulfilled dreams
vii.
and your tedium
of wandering
the centuries

this has a wonderful acceptance of the fact that all that is permanent is the ephemeral
that ending is a wow for me
cheers
floots,
thanks! i thought the ending was a wow too. :)
Is that who's been raiding my pantry. No wonder the dog looks at me so innocently. Yep, a definite WOW poem!!!
I always learn something new from your blog. Thanks for telling us about the 7th month.

To the Chinese (at least the Buddhists and Taoists) it is an important festival.
i agree this is a wow! ending.

It was not a wow, It was a WOW multipled a million times (thats the number of spirits floating around! metaphorically, of course!) I like that and I think you outdid yorself this time!

but i quite like this piece too, i think it captures the spirit of the festival. :)
do the chinese community in Malaysia observe this festival?
Hey there back :) Wow indeed. Great visuals, great rhythm. I love the combination of the supernatural and the urban, it works fantastically.
hi reluctant scribe,
thanks for visiting!
i just have to leave a comment on your post, "Reconnaissance". The visuals are great and i love the mood of the work. :)
if you have no problem, i would like to put your link in my blog.
Hey Dsnake1, I would of course be chuffed if you did, I haven't linked to you for nothing, have I :)? I'm glad that you liked it. Your comment also made me finally delurk over here, I can be rather shy when it comes down to that.
Just to say I have really enjoyed reading your blog the last couple of months since I discovered it :)
Ario
Hi Ario,
i should have link to your blog earlier! you have an interesting site there, one with a "sci-fi" feel around it. i will return to read more of your works. :)
I am glad to hear that you enjoyed reading my blog. I try to post at least once a week.( i work in a telco and do shifts too, so sometimes i don't have much time to go on-line). So far so good. :)
all set to entertain the spirits!
hey magiceye,
actually, the spirits are "entertained". During this month, all over the country, getais, literally meaning "song stages" or concerts are organised to "entertain" and appease these spirits. In the older days, it was chinese operas, but now it has evolved into colourful and bawdy song and dance routines. And the ones truly entertained are those living people in the towns. :)
